A message from the board....

Greetings Brothers. We want to wish all of you and your families a Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy New Year!

Brothers,

As the Holiday Season approaches and we close the year 2000, I want to extend my deepest appreciation to all of you who have supported the association in the past and present. We strive hard to keep the association alive for the benefit of all brothers. The events we have organized have resulted in a great time for all, a time for everyone to get together at the same time and place. Those of you who have attended a golf outing, a basketball game, a picnic, or the 'Night On The Town' will know what I mean. Of course, this is not an easy task, but with your support we can continue to keep the alumni brotherhood alive.

I look forward to working with the guys on the board to make 2001 an even better year for our organization. They have done a great job this year, they've worked hard in planning and organizing these events. I want to thank them for all the hours they have volunteered in to this association. A special thanks to Monte and Brendan for all the support and help you have given me. Also, Bags and Tommy for providing the foundation for this website. And last but not least to Dan 'Pee-Wee' for his hard to work in reviving the association.

In the bonds,

Joe Garritano

First “Night On The Town” A Success!

Our first “Night On The Town” was held on Saturday night, November 11th, aboard our rented luxury bus which drove us throughout New York City. It was a great time had by all that could attend.

The Official DKE Party Bus

The evening started off with everyone meeting at the Lansdowne Bar in Riverdale to board the bus. Our first stop was at the Quiet Man, located on the upper East Side where we met up with LBM. After a few drinks, we made our way to Hogs & Heifers, but we turned away after seeing the long line to get in the place. We lost Coach Mike for a brief moment, but this was only the beginning. The bus made its next stop of the night on Bleeker Street. A large group went to the Village Lantern, while other brothers like Cherry and LBM drank big brown beers on the street corner, a short while later Cherry was ‘naked on Bleeker.’ (Enough said!) At this point we lost Coach Mike and we had to return with one less brother after an exhaustive search by JJ. The good news is that Coach Mike made his way back home safely that night. Thanks to Monte for organizing this bus trip, Brendan for taking care of our financial obligations.

Association Update

We at the alumni association are trying hard to keep our records current in order to keep you informed, but we need your help! We now have about 127 brothers registered.

2000 - Year In Review

This past year was a great year for the association. Our main event of the year which is the annual DKE Open had over 60 participants that contributed a $1,100.00 donation to the American Diabetes Association in the memory of Greg Shrekgast. The next DKE Open is scheduled for Saturday July 28th, 2001.

DKE Open 2000

The usual springtime Alumni Vs. Actives Hoops games was postponed this year, but we’re looking forward to bringing it back in 2001.

Will the Landscape on Mount Dekemore Change?

With Certification by Florida Secretary of State Harris of the vote, Brother George W. Bush, Phi '68, technically became the President Elect.  As of today, whether he will eventually be named the 43d President of the United States is still up in the air. Brother Clay Johnson, Phi '68 is chairing his transition team.

Ironically the last election this close that involved the electoral college was that of Brother Rutherford B. Hayes, Honorary Delta Chi, in the late 1800s.  While only 4 sitting Presidents adorn Mt. Dekemore, a 5th, Franklin Delano Roosevelt claimed Delta Kappa Epsilon as well.  Unfortunately, he was initiated into the local Harvard DKE after the chapter was expelled from the Fraternity for dual memberships with Alpha Delta Phi in the 1890s.

Chapter News Notes:

Lambda Kenyon:

We are currently in the process of getting our web site put together.  Further we recently won the Intermural football championship on Nov. 16th.  Our lounge was recently redone by the brothers and we look forward to further improvements in the future

Phi Chi Rutgers:

Since the Phi Chi chapter has taken back 78 College Ave, we've commenced renovations including a completely new oak floor in our living and dining rooms, over 2,000 square feet! We're spending $40,000. on our chapter and bar rooms, to restore them to their original splendor. Slate roof repair, an entirely new stairwell and general refurbishing is well under way. In all, we will spend about about $130,000. Our first Alumni Dinner to be held in the house (+/- April 20th) in more than 15 years is sure to be a smash!

Michigan State DKE wins Second Team All American in Water Polo:

Michigan State University won the National Water Polo Championship in Seattle Washington. The Spartan team includes two Dekes, (1) Eric Kettler is a sophomore back up defenseman, and (2) Brian Swank is the sophomore starting goalie credited with much of the team's success and who, following the tournament was also selected as a second team All American. The victory comes one week after the Spartans won the Big Ten Championship by upsetting the Michigan Wolverines at the Big Ten Tournament.

Sebastian Bea, Theta Zeta, Wins Olympic Silver Medal:

Sebastian Bea, Theta Zeta, star Cal rower, won the Men's pair final in this year's  Sydney Olympics. Sebastian, teamed with Ted Murphy from West Newton, MA, overcame an injured back to finish behind a boat from France and win the Silver Medal. Olympic Competition is a family experience. His father, Carlos, was a member of the Cuban Olympic Basketball Team in Helsinki in 1952.  It was the first medal for an American Pair since 1976!

Phi Delta, Western Ontario:

The Phi Delta chapter celebrates the end of the Initiatiation process by welcoming 7 new members into our ranks. Congrats go out to James, Chris,  Larry, Panin, Tom, Tim, and Oliver. This pledge class is the first to be initiated in the permanent and brand new house of the Phi Delta chapter purchased by Alumni Brother Mark Gilbank. Through the efforts of many Dekes,  most notibly, Alumni Brothers, Kirk McDermid,  Ryan Parsons and Adam  Parsons, Active Brothers Thomas Sombrea, and Claudio Cipriani, the  renovations of the new house began soon after purchase in June.

The new Deke House boasts 4 floors, containing 2 living floors and 2 common area floors, a DJ booth, the largest backyard deck of any fraternoty house  in London, a bar room (work in progress)and much much more. Future plans include an separate chapter room, and various lounge rooms.
